In 2000, Bio Assets acquired a forestry company, called Santana Madeiras, previously controlled by the Japanese multinational, Toyomenka Corporation (Tomen), that was one of the first Japanese companies to invest in the Amazon in the early 1970s, throuth the acquisition of a forested area of 98,362 hectares on the Marajó Island, Pará.
Bio Assets changed the name of Santana Madeiras to Ecomapuá Conservação Ltda. and, through the development of the Ecomapuá Amazon REDD+ Project, it has become one of the leading Brazilian companies involved in forest conservation and carbon credits generation. The Ecomapuá Amazon REDD+ is the first project in the Brazilian forest carbon market to apply two Standards, VCS together with Social Carbon, to quantify both carbon benefits, environmental and social “co-benefits”
